Le terme d’agroécologie s’affirme progressivement depuis la fin des années 2000 dans les organismes de recherche agronomique (INRAE, Cirad), les appels à projets de recherche et les publications scientifiques. La génétique végétale n’échappe pas à cette tendance, mais l’appropriation de l’agroécologie se fait plus tardivement et difficilement dans ce domaine que pour le reste de la recherche agronomique. L’article propose alors de saisir, par le bas, ce qu’induit l’injonction à l’agroécologie à la génétique végétale, à partir d’une enquête sur une UMR dont la tutelle principale est le Cirad, organisme de recherche et développement tourné vers le Sud global. Il s’agira de retracer la mise à l’agenda du terme au sein du Cirad et du laboratoire d’enquête, puis de décrire les diverses conceptions de l’agroécologie présentes dans l’unité – faisant écho à une diversité d’engagements épistémiques – avant d’analyser les ressorts de l’appropriation de ces conceptions par les scientifiques. L’enquête révèle l’existence de trois interprétations de l’agroécologie dans le laboratoire, qui donnent lieu à des appropriations différenciées et à des stratégies de crédibilisation de la part de celles et ceux qui les défendent.
