Traditionnellement, le tourisme kuna a été étudié à travers le prisme de la gouvernance kuna et de sa résistance pour préserver le patrimoine bioculturel. En d'autres termes, le cadre d'analyse de la gestion du tourisme kuna a été la longue histoire de la résistance autochtone aux politiques d'acculturation et d'assimilation des États-nations latino-américaines. L'étude vise à positionner la gestion touristique kuna en général, et l'écotourisme kuna en particulier, dans les débats animant les études touristiques post-pandémiques autour des concepts de post-développement et de décroissance. Pour ce faire, dans un premier temps, une recension des projets/initiatives issus de la coopération internationale et mis en oeuvre dans la comarca entre 1979 et 2023, a été réalisée dans le but d'observer le type de projets touristiques ainsi que l'autonomie kuna dans l’établissement des priorités de développement par rapport aux tendances internationales. Par la suite, une lecture décroissanciste de ces projets a été faite pour voir si les aspects travaillés permettent de conclure à la présence d'un modèle de développement alternatif à la croissance.
