Abstract
Abstract This chapter analyzes “Off the Derech” (OTD, or leaving the Orthodox path) films as a distinct genre that emerged in the 1990s, contrasting them with earlier depictions of exits from Orthodox Judaism. While classic films like The Jazz Singer portrayed religious abandonment as an inevitable consequence of Americanization, with sons rebelling against powerless fathers, contemporary OTD films typically feature female protagonists making dramatic escapes from powerful institutional forces. Drawing on existing scholarship about “the female gothic” and the broader mediatization of OTD narratives, this chapter employs the anthropological concept of “cultural translation”—particularly its emphasis on secular scholars’ self-reflexive critique when interpreting traditional cultures. Through this lens, the chapter examines not only the compelling narratives of religious exit but also the implicit ideological positions of the films’ predominantly secular creators and audiences. This analysis reveals how OTD films and their representations of Orthodox communities are shaped by a “secular gaze” and an underlying secularist triumphalism.
