IAEA activities in support of development and utilization of neutron sources

Abstract
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Physics Section provides support to Member States in the development and promotion of nuclear applications for peaceful purposes and related capacity building. The Section also operates the Nuclear Science and Instrumentation Laboratory (NSIL) at Seibersdorf, Austria. A number of activities are being implemented to facilitate neutron-based applications providing various resources such as development of publications, maintenance of databases, guidance on establishment of ionizing radiation facilities, comprehensive review, and advice on utilisation of the neutron sources and their applications, including education and training. The NSIL has been contributing to capacity building in effective utilisation of nuclear instrumentation and neutron analytical techniques. The planned establishment of the Ion Beam Facility at Seibersdorf will considerably expand the training and research capabilities with diverse nuclear analytical techniques. The recently launched Initiative on Neutrons for Nuclear Sciences and Applications aims to provide support to new facility projects by leveraging the expertise from the well-established facilities in assisting the preparation of justification and feasibility studies, infrastructure assessment, and cost-benefit and risk analyses. Additionally, the initiative intends to ensure long-term support across various stages of project implementation. By doing so, Physics Section supports Member States in building positive socioeconomic impacts, particularly in areas where neutron-based applications can make a significant difference and contributing to sustainable development.
