This parametric study investigates the effect of intermittent construction joints on the moments, shear, and tensile forces on the barrier wall and deck slab overhang in slab-on-girder bridges due to transverse vehicle impact loads.This study used the threedimensional finite-element modeling of TL-5 single-slope concrete barrier mounted over a 1.5 m length deck overhang.The length of the barrier, Lb, and intermittent open expansion joint spacing: the joint spacings considered in this research were 6, 5, 4, and 3 m.For the 6 m joint spacing, the total lengths of the barrier studied in this research were 24, 18, and 12 m.Also, for the 5 m joint spacing, 20, 15, and 10 m total barrier lengths were studied.Moreover, the total lengths of the barriers were 20, 16, 12, and 8 m for the 4 m joint spacing.For the 3 m joint spacing, the total barrier lengths were taken at 15, 12, 9, and 6 m.In all these barrier-deck overhang systems, the overhang length in the direction of traffic was taken equal to the total barrier length.For applied transverse impact load within the barrier length, the results show that intermittent joints can lead to higher transverse moments and shear forces at the barrier base, with increases of up to 44% and 9%, respectively, while reducing the maximum horizontal moment in the barrier wall.Additionally, intermittent joints caused an increase of up to 58% and 23% in moments and tensile forces in the deck overhang.In contrast, the intermittent expansion joint influence was minimal in the exterior load case at the barrier end.
