Abstract
La médina représente l’héritage architectural et urbain précolonial caractéristique des civilisations arabo-musulmanes au Maghreb et au Moyen-Orient. De récentes recherches analysant la médina, entreprises par des chercheurs ancrés dans le savoir local des communautés, démontrent l’importance des valeurs islamiques dans le développement de cet établissement humain. Cependant, et pendant plus d’un siècle en Tunisie, autant les études et les discours sur la médina de Tunis que les pratiques s’en inspirant évacuent plusieurs de ces aspects. En effet, les architectes français orientalistes, arrivés avec la colonisation, et les chercheurs et praticiens tunisiens qui ont pris le relais à la suite de l’indépendance focalisent surtout sur les aspects formels, marginalisant ainsi le savoir local. Cet article s’ancre dans les études décoloniales et puise dans le concept d’« aliénation coloniale » de Fanon pour démontrer la distorsion entre l’interprétation de cet héritage et les valeurs à son origine. La recherche s’appuie sur l’analyse des pratiques et des discours autour de la médina de Tunis durant la période coloniale et postcoloniale.
