OBJETIVO: precisar si la lectura es una actividad cotidiana en las personas de 60 años y más que participan en el Programa del Adulto Mayor de la Municipalidad de San Lucas Sacatepéquez y el efecto en el proceso cognitivo de atención y memoria. MÉTODO: análisis descriptivo de las cifras recabadas en el cuestionario de datos generales realizado en la población objeto de estudio y de la Evaluación Cognitiva Montreal (Montreal cognitive assessment / MoCA). La población investigada son hombres y mujeres de 60 años y más que asisten al Programa del Adulto Mayor en la Municipalidad de San Lucas Sacatepéquez. RESULTADOS: edad, lectura, atención y memoria tienen relación ya que los adultos mayores que si leen, tienen capacidad alta y más alta, mientras que los que, no leen, no puntean en estas capacidades. De la misma manera las deficiencias en estas capacidades se presentan en mayor número en personas que no leen y en menor proporción en los que si leen. CONCLUSIÓN: la práctica cotidiana de la lectura es un hábito que puede ayudar a las personas mayores a prevenir o minimizar el deterioro cognitivo, al mismo tiempo ayudará en el proceso de atención y memoria.
