Ambidextrous leadership in remote crisis management: insights from sports managers

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of sport organization managers’ empowering and directive leadership behaviors within a remote crisis management context on two dimensions of employee performance (in-role and adaptive) and well-being.Methodology Data were collected through online questionnaires, and analyses were performed on a sample of 174 manager-employee dyads from 44 work teams in 33 Canadian nonprofit sport organizations.Findings The results revealed that sport managers’ empowering leadership behaviors were positively related to employee in-role performance, adaptability, and well-being. Conversely, directive leadership behaviors were not significantly associated with these outcomes. However, managers who combined high levels of empowering and directive behaviors – demonstrating an ambidextrous leadership style – were most effective in enhancing employee performance.Practical Implications Sport managers can maximize employee performance during remotely–managed crises by balancing the delegation of authority over core task processes with the provision of structure and direction for overarching crisis strategies. Our results underscore the value of integrating empowering and directive behaviors, emphasizing the importance of a balanced leadership approach tailored to the situational demands of remote crisis contexts.Research Contribution By examining the combined effects of empowering and directive leadership behaviors among sport managers during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study addresses significant gaps in sport management research related to crisis and virtual leadership.Originality This study introduces the concept of ambidextrous leadership to the study of crisis management and remote work in sport settings.
