Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Abstract This chapter begins with the framing example of another early modern woman writer, Rachel Speght. Her verse narrative, A Dream, cites Paul’s activist principle of messianic gifts to overturn patriarchal restrictions on women’s education and teaching. Similar to Marina, Paulina and Hermione each speak truth to masculine power in modes of parrhesia that assert the physical and spiritual integrity of the female body. Paulina also expands the critical range of scriptural heteroglossia by correcting Leontes and his male courtiers in diverse speaking-positions of Paul’s letters. During her state trial, Hermione redefines Leontes’s charges of adultery and treason as slanders against herself, Mamillius, and the state. Her defence combines defence rhetoric characteristic of English equity courts and forensic logic typical of criminal trials. The oracle’s vindicating judgement links the discovery of Perdita to the healing of Sicily’s broken body politic. As in Pericles, Shakespeare transposes Paul’s rhetorical model of rebuke and repair into the concluding dramaturgy. Paulina’s curated animation of the ‘dead’ Hermione fulfils the oracle’s criteria for reconciling the royal family. But Hermione’s wordless forgiveness also awakens court spectators’ awareness that restoring the body politic requires longer-term collaborative care. Leontes commissions Paulina to lead a public forum for multifocal truth-and-reconciliation storytelling by everyone affected by the play’s events. Provisionally, their distributed participation will rebuild a consensually regenerated Sicilian politics.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
