Il contributo focalizza l’attenzione su Fabrizio Lupo e in particolar modo sulla declinazione del concetto di “segno,” pervasivo sin dall’incidenza della vicenda biblica di Tobia e l’angelo, di cui si evidenziano le occorrenze manifeste e latenti nell’opera. L’attenzione all’elemento scritturale ma anche ad altri riferimenti letterari (Hesse, per esempio) e alla produzione coccioliana (in particolar modo Il cielo e la terra) consente di riflettere sull’uso delle fonti da parte dello scrittore livornese e su immagini e tematiche ricorrenti nella sua opera. Emerge l’importanza del motivo del “riconoscimento” nell’amore omoerotico, fattore che determina il passaggio dalla “confusione babelica” all’angelicismo e all’unicità dell’amore, rispetto al quale i molteplici amori precedenti costituirebbero, in una prospettiva figurale, umbrae futurorum. Insiste nel testo anche la matrice gidiana nella presenza di figure di “falsari” nei personaggi di Keller, Munari e William T.
