Pour « décloisonner » la philosophie, il peut être utile de comprendre comment la qualité de « philosophe » en vient à être conférée à quelqu’un. Nous nous pencherons ici sur le traitement posthume de John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) en France et sur les manières dont son oeuvre et ses engagements ont facilité ou, au contraire, entravé sa canonisation philosophique. Pour ce faire, nous exploiterons deux corpus différents : d’une part, les nouvelles, nécrologies et notices relatives à la mort de Mill dans la presse française en 1873 ; d’autre part, les hommages et analyses sur Mill publiés dans le champ philosophique entre 1873 et 1874. Comme on essaiera de le montrer, alors que l’appréciation posthume « grand public » de Mill va saluer la mémoire de l’économiste politique plutôt que celle du philosophe, évoquant de manière positive ou critique — en fonction de l’idéologique adoptée — ses différentes positions (notamment sur les promesses et les périls de la démocratie moderne et les droits des femmes), l’évaluation proprement philosophique de l’oeuvre millienne va s’opérer à la lumière de sa compatibilité doctrinale avec les différents mouvements, écoles, ou courants (en particulier le positivisme et le criticisme) qui composent le paysage spéculatif de l’époque. Mais, comme on le verra aussi, ces deux réceptions se rejoignent dans le constat qu’elles font de l’échec de la carrière politique de Mill et dans leur volonté de mobiliser la considération de son « caractère » pour rendre raison de ses idées et de ses engagements.
