Abstract
El reconocimiento al derecho sobre los territorios ancestrales de los Pueblos Indígenas y Afrodescendientes de Centroamérica tiene distintos grados de avance y concreción en los países de la región. Sin embargo, la afirmación de derechos sobre el uso de las áreas costeras y especialmente el mar, tiene un menor avance normativo y por tanto es el origen de tensiones y conflictos. Este proceso desigual de reconocimiento ilustra mecanismos y prácticas desde los Estados que han obstruido las relaciones históricas ente pueblos que comparten en el mar, particularmente en el Caribe centroamericano y del sur occidental. Estos pueblos han conservado las relaciones a través del tiempo, pero también han contribuido al cuido del mar, dotarle de significados diversos y afirmar derechos sobre las áreas que comparten, a pesar del efecto disruptivo de las fronteras y políticas estatales. Trascender los referentes estatales y acercar la investigación a los lazos históricos creados por los Pueblos Indígenas y Afrodescendientes sobre y a través del mar es una invitación a la investigación comprometida de las ciencias sociales en la región.
