BACKGROUND: The pros and cons of social media has been a subject of much popular discussion. However, this paper aims at exploring yet another dimension of social media which is of paramount importance and warrants discussion and evaluation. Parental involvement in social media has become a pervasive source of "technoference"-technology-induced disruptions that affects the quality of interpersonal communication within families. These digital distractions erode emotional trust, reduce attentiveness, and weaken the structural cohesion that binds family units. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the impact of parental social media use on the quality of family communication. Specifically, it examines (1) the relationship between parental screen time and family communication indicators such as emotional availability, trust in children, shared meals, and one-on-one conversations; (2) whether parental gender (father vs. mother) and cultural background (collectivist vs. individualist) influence these outcomes; and (3) how these findings can inform practical strategies to support healthier parent-child communication in the digital age. METHODS: This study explores the impact of parental social media behavior on family communication through a quantitative, independently conducted survey of 260 parents and children, randomly selected from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. The surveys were distributed through schools for children and directly to parents via community outreach and digital recruitment. RESULTS: • Screen Time & Emotional Impact: Extended parental screen time correlates with reduced emotional availability (r = -0.52, p < 0.01), decreased trust in children (β = -0.34, p < 0.05), and weakened family cohesion. • Cultural Differences: Collectivist cultures experience a 17% greater impact from technoference compared to individualist cultures. • Gender Patterns: Mothers report shorter screen time but higher guilt, while fathers exhibit longer screen time with lower awareness of its effects. CONCLUSIONS: As the primary worldwide look of its type, this research provides important insights into how social media reshapes the circle of relative dynamics across cultural and gender lines, emphasizing the importance of fostering accountable virtual conduct to assist healthier relationships. Practical guidelines consist of instituting device-unfastened intervals, enhancing parental digital literacy, and developing culturally tailored interventions to mitigate the disruptive outcomes of social media on family communication.
