Introducción: La esperanza de vida creciente ha elevado la población mundial de adultos mayores trayendo consigo una mayor incidencia de condiciones asociadas al envejecimiento. Entre estas el deterioro cognitivo y la depresión son notables, ya que a menudo coexisten y disminuyen significativamente la calidad de vida de este grupo. Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre el deterioro cognitivo y presencia de depresión en adultos mayores institucionalizados en asilos privados de Aguascalientes. Metodología: Investigación cuantitativa, correlacional, transversal y prospectiva. Se incluyó a 50 adultos mayores de ambos sexos, fueron seleccionados por conveniencia de 6 asilos privados. Se utilizaron el Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) y la Escala de Depresión Geriátrica de Yesavage para la recolección de datos, ambos con alta confiabilidad (Alfa de Cronbach de 0.89 y 0.80, respectivamente). La hipótesis se evaluó con la prueba de chi cuadrado. Resultados: La edad promedio de los participantes fue de 76 años (rango de 60 a 99), con 54% de mujeres. El 52% llevaba menos de un año institucionalizado y 68% ingresó de manera voluntaria. Sorprendentemente 70% de los participantes mostró signos de depresión y 98% presentó deterioro cognitivo. Sin embargo, no se encontró una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre el deterioro cognitivo y la depresión (p = 0.123). Conclusión: En este estudio no se halló una relación estadísticamente significativa entre ambas condiciones en la población estudiada, la alta prevalencia de depresión y deterioro cognitivo en adultos mayores institucionalizados resalta la necesidad urgente de detección temprana e intervención oportuna en estos entornos.
