Effects of Ce- and Pr-enriched oxides on the tensile properties and microstructure of CLAM steel

Abstract
Oxide Dispersion Strengthening (ODS) is an effective strategy for enhancing the performance of Reduced Activation Ferritic/Martensitic (RAFM) steel. In this study, two ODS-RAFM samples (named as MCC and MCP, respectively) containing Ce- and Pr-enriched oxides were fabricated via mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. Their properties and microstructure were compared to those of a reference sample (named as MC) without addition of any strengthening phase. The results demonstrate that the addition of Ce- and Pr-enriched oxides effectively refined the grain structure and induced the formation of high number density Ce-Si-O and Pr-Si-O nanoparticles (NPs) in the MCC and MCP samples, respectively. The interfaces analysis results confirmed the presence of the specific orientation relationships and coherent interfaces between NPs and [0 0 1] M of the matrix. The Pr-enriched oxide exhibited better strengthening effect, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the MCP sample reached 1224.7 MPa at room temperature (RT) and 721.3 MPa at 550°C. The Ce-enriched oxide showed a good synergistic strengthening effect of strength and ductility. The UTSs of MCC samples were 1137.3 MPa and 643.2 MPa, and their total elongations were 12.7% and 12.9%, respectively, at RT and 550°C. These results indicate that Ce- and Pr-enriched oxide NPs could serve as effective strengthening phases.
