Abstract
This review examines John Wall’s Ethics in Light of Childhood, a groundbreaking work that reorients ethical reflection by placing childhood, rather than adulthood, at its center. Wall introduces “childism” as an approach that, like feminism, seeks to transform ethical theory and practice by attending to marginalized experiences—in this case, children’s lives. The book is structured around three guiding questions—ontological, teleological, and deontological—which Wall explores historically, theoretically, and practically. He argues that childhood reveals humanity’s creative, narrative, and relational capacities, offering fresh perspectives on human rights, family, and moral life. The review highlights Wall’s balanced treatment of children’s agency and vulnerability, his critical engagement with historical models of childhood, and his imaginative reconception of ethics as inclusive, dynamic, and creative. At the same time, it raises concerns about the absence of children’s first-hand voices and the tension between theory and practice. Ultimately, the review affirms the book’s significance for ethics, theology, and childhood studies.
