Abstract
The paper deals with the oldest surviving cartulary of the Archbishops of Magdeburg, Albert of Sternberg (in office 1368–1371), and Peter Jelito (in office 1372–1381), covering the period 1368–1372 [1377]. It is deposited in Landesarchiv Sachsen-Anhalt, Abteilung Magdeburg under the signature Cop. No. 32. The cartulary is an extremely important source for the history of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg and the tenure of Albert of Sternberg, whose time in office is completely covered by this source. In total, it contains approximately 150 entries on 58 paper folios. In spite of its importance, the cartulary was never published in a single sourcebook. The paper first provides the physical description of the cartulary and deals with its composition. It then discusses the form of the entries and their relation to the original documents and other surviving official books. The core of the cartulary consists of almost complete copies of the issued documents, which can thus be reconstructed. The paper also deals with the way the archbishop’s office functioned, but also addresses the linguistic form of the German records (which represent the majority of the entries). About half of the entries have already been printed in various regional German sourcebooks (mostly dating to the second half of the nineteenth century), which makes it difficult to work with this source. This paper provides a list of sourcebooks that include records from the cartulary. The cartulary will be soon accessible in its entirety in a printed sourcebook edited by authors of the paper and their colleagues from Palacky University Olomouc.
