Abstract
Since 2005, an international association has been conducting research on the types of tourism present in Chilean Patagonia, and more specifically in the Aysén region, which has led to the identification of various tourism niches, such as long-distance itineraries, backpackers, ecotourism practices and scientific tourism. These practices have been identified as cultural markers (Corneloup et al., 2004) of Patagonian tourism. Special attention is given to the notion of scientific tourism, given the widespread use of the concept in different tourism settings and contexts. A first attempt at synthesis and definition is proposed through a literature review (Mao and Bourlon, 2011ª) that demonstrates the existence of different forms of tourism practices and/or products that associate the scientific dimension to varying degrees. The conditions of emergence of the concept and its relevance to the dynamics of contemporary tourism show that the link between tourism and science is not evident to many authors. There are debates and sometimes contradictory points of view. For Chilean Patagonia, scientific tourism is proposed for its territorial development (Bourlon et al., 2011b; 2012). Based on the theme of scientific tourism, other concepts are examined, such as the knowledge economy, new forms of scientific cooperation, transformations and changes in mobility, scientific mediation, territorial intelligence, transitions in tourism and territorial systems, etc. In order to relate the contributions to the knowledge of this international cooperation, the proposed definition of Scientific Tourism and various experiences carried out in the Aysén Region are evaluated. This study is a contribution to the understanding of the use of science as a territorial resource, and science at the service of new forms of mediation will be presented. It seems that a more participatory science and an openness to scientific tourism within contemporary mobility can strengthen the development of nature tourism areas such as the Chilean Patagonia.
