Abstract
Abstract Holistic education aims to cultivate kindness and compassion. This chapter examines Nel Noddings’ concept of caring and the Buddhist four immeasurables: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. It further explores the Mahāyāna way of the bodhisattva to develop compassion for others’ well-being and liberation, drawing on the teachings of the Dalai Lama and Śāntideva. In addition, Chögyam Trungpa explains compassion as an energetic process, and the Zen teacher Joan Halifax highlights the social implication of compassion. Then, this chapter examines the path of love and compassion in Hinduism, Sufism, and Buddhism. The Bhagavad Gita introduces the path of devotional love (bhakti yoga), and Sufism stresses cultivating the heart and love. Pure Land and Shin Buddhist path focuses on developing a compassionate heart. In Shin Buddhism, those who have fully realized the Pure Land path are called myōkōnin, and Asahara Saichi appears as a representative figure. Finally, this chapter reveals love as the fundamental reality through Krishnamurti’s meditation.
