Rebirth or resistance? Reconsidering poetic development in Forugh Farrokhzad’s oeuvre

Abstract
Critical studies of Forugh Farrokhzad’s poetry often divide her work into two distinct phases: an early period characterised by confusion, remorse and self-doubt, and a later one of “rebirth” marked by creative confidence and autonomy. This article challenges that binary by arguing that emotional ambivalence – particularly the tension between self-doubt and self-confidence – remains a consistent thread throughout Farrokhzad’s oeuvre. Through close readings of three poems – ‘Sin’, ‘Only Sound Remains’ and ‘Green Delusion’ – the article demonstrates how Farrokhzad’s unconventional representations of love and desire not only defied the social norms of her time but also generated a voice – one that continued to show traces of self-doubt, inner conflict and resistance throughout her career. While ‘Sin’ stands out as one of her most significant early works despite its stylistic unevenness, later poems reveal a complex negotiation between vulnerability and assertion rather than a clean break between two distinct creative phases. By tracing this continuity, the article reconsiders Farrokhzad’s poetic development as a sustained exploration of identity, internalised conflict and resistance.
