Ecotranslation matters: foraging ‘all our relations’ in Rita Wong’s ecopoetics

Abstract
Situated at the intersection of translation studies and ecocriticism, this article proposes an expanded notion of ecotranslation as a poetic practice that acknowledges writing-as-connection-making with the more-than-human Earth. Drawing on scholars such as Jonathan Skinner and Evelyn Reilly, it highlights ecopoetics as a creative relational practice that crosses linguistic, spatial, and species boundaries. In parallel, translation is explored with reference to Michael Cronin’s notion of a posthumanist eco-translation. The synergies between ecopoetics and translation give rise to a creatively reconfigured notion of ecotranslation that attends to and seeks poetic expressions within ecological interconnections. Through four threads, namely movement, posthuman subjects, language materiality, and more-than-human multilingualism, this notion of ecotranslation-as-writing is unravelled here in dialogue with the collection forage (2007) by Canadian poet Rita Wong. Including a range of poetic registers, innovative form, footnotes, secondary material, and marginalia, Wong’s poems resist the violent power dynamics of the Corporatocene that sacrifices bodies and environments for financial profit. The lens of ecotranslation highlights how forage reshapes language to imagine the human as part of a larger community, inhabits multiple perspectives, and makes connections across enlivened more-than-human ecologies. It illuminates a withnessing practice that challenges hierarchies and human superiority as writers and translators are acknowledged in embodied interaction with physical-material environments. Exploring forage through a creatively reconfigured ecotranslation-as-writing can thus generate post-anthropocentric ways of thinking, writing, and translating with the Earth.
