Chechen Combat Units in Ukraine: A Displaced Insurgency

Abstract
The conflict in Ukraine features the deployment of Chechen combatants who are engaged in fratricidal conflict against other Chechen elements. Supporters of the Caucasus Emirate have joined proponents of ethno-nationalist Ichkeria on the Ukrainian side in such units as the Dzhokhar Dudayev Battalion, the Sheikh Mansur Battalion, and the Separate Special Purpose Battalion. On the Russian side, Kadyrovtsy are fighting along Russian forces and are used as a Kremlin’s propaganda tool. This article examines what attracted new recruits, veteran insurgents, and foreign fighters from other battlefields to Ukraine. The article demonstrates that this is not a simple case of foreign fighters joining new conflicts in pursuit of their ideological convictions or revenge against Russian forces. Instead, this is a rare case of a displaced insurgency, where North Caucasus foreign fighters in Ukraine found a battlefield that presented an opportunity to help Ukrainian defenders but also to keep fighting for the original insurgent goals going back to the North Caucasus. Opting for insurgent survival, Chechen foreign fighters have forged a cross-ideological union that has revived the insurgency in joint forces that could potentially be capable of going back to the original insurgent battlefields.
