Saving Markets or Nature? The Paradox of Ecosystem Service Privatization and Commodification

Abstract
Efforts to commodify ecosystem services (ES) through mechanisms like Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) are often framed as pragmatic solutions to environmental degradation and economic instability. This paper challenges such narratives by conducting a trans-paradigm analysis that bridges neoclassical marketing theory (4Ps) with Marxian commodity theory, revealing an intrinsic paradox within market-based conservation. While marketing literature emphasizes how PES packages and promotes ecosystem services to generate use and exchange value, critical political ecology and Marxian analysis expose how this commodification process produces fictitious capital—ultimately detaching conservation from its material ecological basis. By applying Marx’s lens of commodity evolution—tracing the transition from use value to exchange value—this paper argues that PES is not merely a market tool for ecological preservation, but rather a mechanism that sustains financial markets by transforming nature into speculative assets. The duality of PES lies in its ability to generate short-term market efficiencies while intensifying long-term systemic contradictions. This process reflects a broader pattern within late capitalism, wherein capital accumulation hinges on the perpetual abstraction and circulation of ecological goods. The theoretical contribution of this paper lies in demonstrating how the intersection of marketing and Marxian theory reveals the inescapable tension between ecological sustainability and capital reproduction. By synthesizing these two traditionally isolated paradigms, the study highlights the paradoxical nature of PES as a necessary yet contradictory force—temporarily stabilizing markets while eroding the value it purports to preserve.
