A Fixed-Time Incremental Backstepping-Based Direct Lift Altitude Fault-Tolerant Control for Unilateral Horizontal-Tail-Damaged Aircraft

Abstract
This article investigates unilateral horizontal tail damage and fault-tolerant control (FTC) to improve the robustness and flight performance of aircraft subject to such a fault. The impact mechanism of horizontal tail damage on the aircraft is analyzed, and a high-fidelity nonlinear model of a horizontal-tail-damaged aircraft is established based on the property of this damage. A direct lift-based altitude (DLA) control strategy is presented, which accelerates the altitude response dynamics while solving the issue of insufficient altitude control performance in damaged aircraft. In addition, a fixed-time-based incremental backstepping (IBKS) control is proposed, which improves the flight control performance and guarantees the fixed-time stability of the closed-loop altitude control system. Finally, simulations and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiments verify and highlight the effectiveness and superiority of the developed altitude fault-tolerant controller.
