ntexte : On appelle « proche aidant » une personne qui s’occupe d’un membre de sa famille qui est malade en l’aidant à accomplir ses activités quotidiennes et à assurer son bien-être général. Cette tâche ne va pas sans conséquence. La présente étude a pour but d’évaluer le fardeau des proches aidants de patients recevant des soins palliatifs. Méthodologie : Un devis de recherche à méthodes mixtes et à modèle convergent et parallèle a été choisi pour répondre aux objectifs de l’étude. Des données quantitatives ont été recueillies auprès de 323 proches aidants à l’aide de l’outil Zarit Burden Interview ou ZBI (entrevue sur le fardeau de Zarit). Les participants à la collecte de données quantitatives ont aussi été invités à prendre part aux entrevues qualitatives individuelles, qui se sont poursuivies jusqu’à atteindre la saturation des données. Un guide d’entrevue semi-structurée, comprenant des questions d’approfondissement, a été préparé pour explorer le fardeau porté par les proches aidants (n = 15). Résultats : La moyenne obtenue au score de fardeau global (29,22) montre que la cohorte de participants porte une lourde charge. Ce sont les domaines des relations et du bien-être affectif qui étaient les plus touchés. Trois thèmes sont ressortis de l’analyse des transcriptions d’entrevues : le fardeau des proches aidants, les facteurs qui ajoutent au fardeau et les facteurs qui l’allègent. Conclusion : Les proches aidants de patients en phase terminale qui reçoivent des soins palliatifs vivent un grand stress et portent un lourd fardeau, ce qui entraîne des conséquences sur leur bien-être physique et affectif et, en fin de compte, se répercute également sur la personne malade ayant besoin de soins. Les interventions axées sur les préoccupations physiques et émotionnelles du proche aidant sont de la plus grande importance pour aider ce dernier à alléger son fardeau et à donner de meilleurs soins au patient.
