Abstract

Schools have long been considered gendered spaces in which students and teachers routinely negotiate gendered interactions. The current broader social climate has seen an increase in incidents of misogyny, homophobia and sexism in schools. The manosphere is but one online space that school-aged boys are influenced by ideas that degrade, belittle and marginalize others. Adding to the research in teacher education and gender justice, this paper examines the experiences of six preservice teachers in Canada who attempt to challenge and disrupt normative attitudes and views of patriarchal masculinities during their school practicums. Drawing on interview and ethnographic data, we examine the challenges for preservice teachers who disrupt normative masculinity in schools.
