Henry Bataille, dont le nom est tombé dans l’oubli, a connu un succès incontestable sur les scènes parisiennes au tournant du xx e siècle. Son oeuvre abondante est aujourd’hui rangée parmi les pièces de Boulevard ; elle annonce pourtant l’avènement du drame moderne et contemporain. L’analyse de deux de ses chefs-d’oeuvre, Maman Colibri (1904) et La femme nue (1908), permet de constater que quelques-uns de leurs procédés mettent en question la forme canonique du drame, dont la charpente classique est brisée par l’intrusion d’éléments épiques qui se manifestent dans les récits des personnages. Le dramaturge déplace ainsi l’action dramatique vers l’étude des âmes souffrantes. Des séquences narratives récurrentes changent le statut du personnage qui, dépourvu d’attributs actifs et de traits immobiles, semble surplomber l’action afin de se focaliser sur ses réflexions souvent de nature ontologique. L’étude de ces deux oeuvres met en valeur l’évolution du personnage agissant qui tend à s’effacer derrière le personnage récitant , témoin de la fragilité de son existence.
