Entre le dire et le faire Pour un lexique du religieux romain Avant-proposLe dossier qui suit a pour origine une série d'ateliers scientifiques qui se sont tenus alternativement à Lyon et Paris entre 2021 et 2024, fruit d'un projet co-porté par les laboratoires HiSoMA, à Lyon, et AnHiMA, à Paris.Ces rencontres ont réuni des spécialistes du polythéisme romain autour d'une perspective (et d'une méthode) de recherche qui peut sembler peu originale de prime abord, mais qui est en réalité nécessaire et actuelle : le vocabulaire religieux des Romains.De fait, la réflexion sur les termes utilisés dans les documents textuels anciens est au fondement du travail de l'historien, porté aussi depuis le milieu du xx e siècle par le développement de la linguistique comparée 1 .En outre, à partir du moment où l'attention a été portée vers le rite et sa performativité 2 , l'épigraphie religieuse, qu'elle soit dédicatoire ou honorifique, a gagné en poids informatif dans la mesure où elle Ainsi le terme de cultores renvoie-t-il à une forme d'organisation sociale et pas à une dénomination générique des dévots dans le polythéisme romain.
