Este artículo busca estudiar la repercusión de la política alimentaria de la Alianza para el Progreso (1961–1970) a partir de un marco geográfico amplio en la región Latinoamericana. El texto explora el papel de los rumores como armas políticas en América Latina durante la década de 1960, centra su atención en el caso de la distribución de la leche en polvo donada por Estados Unidos como parte de ese programa de desarrollo, y aborda cómo su consumo generó resistencias discursivas, principalmente por grupos antiimperialistas en la región, que vinculaban la distribución de la leche con un supuesto caso de esterilización forzada. ¿Por qué fue posible presentar argumentos creíbles a favor de esta idea? La explicación parece basarse en el contexto de la Guerra Fría, en la cercanía de la experiencia cubana y la intervención contrarrevolucionaria de los Estados Unidos en la región, así como en los debates acerca del control natal. De allí surgieron teorías conspirativas sobre la regulación del crecimiento de las poblaciones latinoamericanas como mecanismo para controlar el comunismo las cuales conectaron las donaciones de leche con una supuesta estrategia de biocontrol ejercida a través de un programa de esterilización en la región.
