Electric Power Systems (EPS) face mounting challenges, including rapid load growth, aging infrastructure, and increasing reliance on non-dispatchable renewables-all while ensuring reliability amid climate change. Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), such as energy storage, demand response, and localized renewable generation, offer crucial solutions to enhance grid flexibility, resilience, and sustainability. End-toend DER strategy implementation requires rethinking market frameworks, adopting emerging technologies, and accelerating grid integration while catering to the regional energy security, equity and sustainability needs. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the deployment of DERs in two provinces of Canada, namely British Columbia (BC) and Ontario. Firstly, the DER potential in both provinces is introduced, detailing current policies, regulations, and deployment status. Secondly, the challenges associated with DER adoption are examined. Finally, based on comparative analysis and discussion, recommendations and pathways are provided to accelerate DER adoption.
