This paper presents a numerical study on the one-dimensional site response of soil columns with layers of normally consolidated clay that undergo strength degradation after reaching peak strength. Using the finite difference software FLAC 8.1 and the PM4Silt constitutive model, different rates and magnitudes of strength loss, along with clay layer thicknesses, were considered to examine how these factors influence the resulting surface ground motions. Eleven ground motion records from the NGAWest2 database were linearly scaled to nine different Peak Ground Accelerations (PGA) to assess the combined effects of strength loss behavior and clay thicknesses under varying ground motion intensities. The results show that strength loss has minimal impacts on the surface motion spectral acceleration. Similarly, the energy of the surface motion, expressed as the Cumulative Absolute Velocity (CAV), was largely insensitive to strength loss. These results highlight the importance of fully nonlinear site response analyses for capturing complex soil behaviors during earthquake loading and offer perspectives that are valuable for critical site assessments. Implications for engineering practice and future research directions are also discussed. • Strength loss in clays modeled using FLAC 8.1 and PM4Silt. • Parametric study varied clay thickness and strength loss characteristics. • Eleven NGAWest2 records scaled to nine PGA levels. • Spectral acceleration and CAV showed little sensitivity to strength loss. • Fully nonlinear analysis improves understanding of complex soil behavior.
