La demande en interprétation dans les services publics en France n’a cessé de croître depuis 1970, date à laquelle ISM (Inter Service Migrants) Interprétariat, fournisseur de services historique et toujours largement majoritaire sur le marché aujourd’hui, a commencé à proposer de tels services d’interprétation. Depuis 2015, la croissance de cette demande est encore plus forte, à l’exception d’une légère baisse en 2020 due au contexte de la pandémie. Pourtant, le secteur a du mal à se professionnaliser en raison des trop peu nombreuses formations spécifiques et parce que les principales langues de la migration (à l’exception de l’arabe et de l’anglais) ne sont pas celles que pratiquent les interprètes diplômés. Notre contribution entend exposer l’histoire du métier en France et son évolution, en s’appuyant notamment sur les données d’ISM Interprétariat, mais aussi de clients (Office français de protection des réfugiés et apatrides, 2023; Cour nationale du droit d’asile, 2023), avant d’essayer de nommer cette activité. Celle-ci a connu de multiples appellations en français allant de l’interprétation communautaire à l’interprétation dans les services publics (Pointurier, 2016), en passant notamment par l’interprétation en milieu social (Organisation internationale de normalisation, 2014), l’interprétation de dialogue (Niemants, 2015), l’interprétation en triade (Delizée, 2015) ou même la médiation interculturelle. Nous tenterons de montrer que les multiples appellations en anglais de l’activité (Wadensjö, 1998; Pöchhacker, 2004; Tipton et Furmanek, 2016) ne correspondent pas toujours exactement à leurs traductions respectives en français. Cette « prolifération des étiquettes » (Gambier, 2012) crée de la confusion, aggravée par l’ambiguïté du terme « médiation » (Pöchhacker, 2008), ce qui entrave très fortement la professionnalisation, et ce malgré les efforts en ce sens menés ces dernières années tant par les prestataires de services (Demaret, 2022) que par les universités. Enfin, nous conclurons avec les perspectives et les défis liés à cette professionnalisation.
