Crustal Architecture and Low‐Temperature Geochronology of an Apparent Cycladic Tectonic Window (NE Attica, Greece): Insights Into Imbrication in Subduction Settings

Abstract
Abstract Understanding the timing and configuration of tectonic nappes in collapsed orogens is integral to reconstructing its geodynamic evolution. Northeastern Attica lies between bivergent Miocene detachment systems and has historically been interpreted as a tectonic window exposing the lowest nappe of the Hellenides, the Basal Unit. Our new correlative mapping instead show the region is dominated by a NE‐dipping block of Cycladic Blueschist Unit (CBU) bounded on either side by normal‐ and thrust‐sense, top‐to‐SW faults. In the west, low‐grade Pelagonian Zone overlies the CBU along the West Cycladic Detachment System (WCDS). To the east, a high‐pressure marble package correlated with the Basal Unit is emplaced above the CBU along the newly identified Marathon Thrust. White mica from sheared rocks in the WCDS footwall record earliest Miocene 40 Ar/ 39 Ar dates. In contrast, detrital mica from the WCDS hanging wall span the Permian to late Eocene, consistent with a decrease in metamorphic grade expected across the WCDS. Zircon (U‐Th)/He cooling dates are similar to southern Attica, suggesting exhumation of the Attic Peninsula to upper crustal levels by the middle Miocene. Our revised crustal architecture and recognition of the Marathon Thrust limit the extent of the Basal Unit and challenge the long‐standing tectonic window model. Instead, we propose the Basal Unit originates from the Internal Hellenides and is locally incorporated into the subduction channel through processes such as out‐of‐sequence thrusting of the CBU or subduction erosion of the upper plate.
