Abstract

The loss of synchronism (LOS), also known as out-of-step (OOS) condition, in synchronous condensers (SCs) is a subject that lacks extensive discussion. The main reason is the low probability of occurrence of this unique phenomenon in traditional power systems. However, SCs have become more prevalent in modern systems due to weak grid related issues resulted by integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs). Traditional LOS protection methods may not work as expected in systems with high penetration of IBRs. This paper investigates the LOS phenomenon in SCs and explores its theoretical basis through the use of phasor diagrams. The impedance trajectory during transient events is mathematically derived to enhance understanding of the LOS behavior in SCs. Additionally, the paper analyses the critical clearing angle (CCA) of an SC and clarifies the distinction between loss of synchronism and pole slipping. Finally, an approach based on the machine’s relative speed, originally proposed for LOS protection of synchronous generators, is applied to SCs to address the limitations of conventional methods.
