Cet article examine les apports de l’approche ethnographique pour l’analyse des organisations comme espaces méso-sociologiques situés à la croisée des interactions micro et d’environnements sociaux plus larges. Les études de terrain donnent l’occasion de documenter les processus d’hybridation entre différentes logiques institutionnelles à l’intérieur d’une même organisation. Elles offrent aussi des outils particulièrement riches pour examiner les formes de travail qui se manifestent dans une organisation, ainsi que la répartition interne du travail. Elles permettent également d’examiner des processus affectifs, tels que les encouragements et la réconciliation, qui se déploient entre les membres. Les ethnographies peuvent ainsi aider à saisir les organisations dans toute leur complexité et à étudier les stratégies employées pour conjuguer avec une pluralité de logiques institutionnelles, de formes de travail et de dynamiques affectives et émotionnelles, autant de phénomènes qui ont une forte incidence sur le niveau d’engagement individuel et l’entretien d’une capacité d’action collective. Ces propositions s’appuient sur un terrain mené par le premier auteur avec un comité logement et un organisme de développement communautaire, ainsi que sur une recherche ethnographique menée actuellement par la deuxième autrice avec un OBNL dédié à la production et à la diffusion des arts et de la culture.
