Abstract
La plupart des chansons de tradition ancienne sont présentes dans les collections folkloriques des xix e et xx e siècles, aussi bien en France qu’en Amérique française. C’est une démonstration indéniable de leur circulation transatlantique. L’une d’entre elles, complainte criminelle qui raconte un triple assassinat, n’a cependant pas obtenu la reconnaissance typologique qu’elle méritait. Conrad Laforte l’a classée dans le catalogue des chansons sur des timbres et l’a considérée comme une chanson locale. Or, un examen approfondi des versions recensées, de leur distribution territoriale, de sa thématique et de ses motifs narratifs, et leur mise en parallèle avec une version datant du xvii e siècle nouvellement repérée en Bretagne, montrent qu’elle est non seulement d’origine française, mais qu’elle appartient incontestablement au fonds ancien. Le motif central du triple assassinat se retrouve également au coeur d’une chansonnette enfantine totalement décalée par rapport à la gravité du sujet et présente un contraste assez saisissant avec la complainte.
