Abstract
Voltage-sourced converters (VSCs) are key enablers of modern power systems, supporting high-voltage DC (HVDC) transmission, ACIDC microgrids, and the integration of renewable energy sources. In many such applications, VSCs operate in a DC grid-following (DC-GFL) mode, where the DC-link voltage is regulated by an external device, and the AC-side functions in either a grid-forming or grid-following role. In DC-GFL operation, the coupling between AC- and DC-side dynamics plays a critical role in determining small-signal stability. However, the influence of DC-side dynamics is often underestimated or neglected, despite its significant impact on overall system behavior. This paper addresses this gap by conducting a small-signal stability analysis of DC-GFL VSCs and introducing a modeling framework that decouples the AC and DC dynamics into two single-input single-output (SISO) transfer functions. The proposed approach not only simplifies the stability analysis of hybrid ACIDC systems but also provides valuable insights into the underlying causes of potential instabilities.
