Abstract
Abstract Introduction It is well understood that arousal, in particular women’s arousal, can be experienced both physically and subjectively, but dominant focuses of gold standard assessments of sexual arousal in women tend to focus on assessments vaginal lubrication. Research suggests that women’s sexual function is more complex and integrates both psychological and physiological processes. Objective This study investigated what women report to be important components of their own experience of sexual arousal. Methods A group of 30 young cisgender pre-menopausal women were interviewed in an open-ended fashion about what aspects of physical and mental arousal were important to them as a part of sexual response. Standard self-report questionnaires were also administered assessing participant sexual function, desire, flexibility, and satisfaction. A content analysis was conducted on the kinds of “physical sensation words” (e.g. lubrication, tingling, blood flow, fullness, wetness etc) used by participants during the interviews. Half of the participants were randomly selected to observe a brief (2 minute) educational video, to explore whether additional information about genital anatomy, and functional changes during arousal, influenced the way women describe their physiological arousal response. Participants completed the study with a final task asking them to rank order a list of “physical sensation words”. Results Participants described a variety of aspects of both subjective and physiological arousal. Most participants placed a stronger emphasis on subjective arousal than physiological arousal. Physiological arousal was only deemed important and relevant to participants when subjective arousal was also present. Similar themes related to physiological arousal sensations were present in the groups that watched the video and that did not, but to varying extents. Most participants placed a strong emphasis on sensations related to genital blood flow, over and above sensations related to vaginal lubrication. Conclusions There are more important aspects of sexual arousal to women than vaginal lubrication, including diverse physiological sensations. Additionally, women tend to emphasis subjective experiences of arousal more so than physical experiences of arousal.
