Abstract
The objective of this mixed-design study is to provide a portrait of the connection to nature, specifically to describe the enjoyment of nature, awareness of nature, empathy and responsibility towards nature, of children aged 2 to 5 years (102 girls and 121 boys) in early childhood centers working in nature-based education in Quebec. The results of the Connectedness to Nature Index – Parents of Preschool Children (CNI-PPC ; 5 points Likert scale; MIN = 1, MAX = 5),) (Sobko et al., 2018) to which 223 parents responded, indicate an average score of 4.42 out of 5 (SD=.42). Descriptive analyses show that enjoyment of nature is the dimension with the highest score (M = 4.8; SD = 0.4), followed by awareness of nature (M = 4.6; SD = 0.5), responsibility towards nature (M = 4.3; SD = 0.8) and finally empathy towards nature (M = 3.9; SD = 0.9). A thematic analysis of individual interviews conducted with 10 educators completes the portrait of children's C2N by describing moments testifying the deployment of children's enjoyment of nature, awareness of nature, empathy and responsibility towards nature. These results will be discussed from the perspective of nature-based education to promote C2N in young children.
