Abstract
Uno de los textos más afortunados que nos ha dejado Plutarco en sus biografías es la écfrasis del desfile triunfal de Paulo Emilio tras su victoria sobre Perseo de Macedonia en Pidna. Igual que en el caso de otros triunfos, inició su ingreso en la cultura occidental con su inclusión, como carta de presentación, entre los triunfos de Petrarca y Boccaccio y en los códices que resumían la historia romana. Su riqueza descriptiva atrajo la atención artística de los gobernantes y comerciantes de las repúblicas italianas y de las autoridades eclesiásticas que decoraron con el triunfo completo, tal como lo describe Plutarco (Aem. 32-34), o con escenas aisladas seleccionadas en función de los intereses del comitente, distintos soportes materiales de los siglos XV y XVI, o sea, de todo el renacimiento italiano. En esta Primera parte del artículo presento y discuto (teniendo siempre como texto de referencia la Vida de Emilio de Plutarco) su iconografía en los arcones de novia y grabados del Quattrocento y, especialmente, en los frescos de salones y fachadas de los palacios de Roma en el Cinquecento.
