Abstract
Entre la fin du xviiie siècle et la première moitié du xixe siècle, on observe à Compiègne une adéquation entre programme politique, ambition esthétique et recours au stuc. Par-delà la succession des régimes et des aménagements réalisés dans cette résidence récemment reconstruite, la référence à l’Antiquité préside à tous les choix décoratifs. Le stuc y occupe une place privilégiée en raison de sa capacité à imiter le marbre et évoquer l’Antiquité dans ses formes les plus sobres. Sa mise en œuvre rapide et son coût moindre par rapport aux matériaux qu’il cherche à imiter expliquent également ce succès. À partir de l’étude de quelques décors emblématiques, cette intervention se propose de mieux comprendre l’usage abondant du stuc à l’époque néoclassique et de circonscrire ses modalités de mise en œuvre tant du point de vue technique qu’historique.
