C’est à un retour synthétique sur une quarantaine d’années de travaux publiés dans Pratiques que se livrent ici les ethnocriticien·nes de la revue. Ces travaux n’ont cessé d’explorer l’indissoluble rapport entre langue, littérature et culture (au sens anthropologique du terme). Dans un premier temps, Jean-Marie Privat et Marie-Christine Vinson reviennent sur leur expérience d’enseignant.es de français dans des collèges ruraux ou de banlieue. Lire n’est jamais une pure expérience cognitive doublée d’une évidence culturelle : tout leur travail a consisté au contraire à placer les élèves dans des pratiques situées (des livres, des lectures, des lecteurices). L’activité professorale est pensée ici selon un mode didactique bien plus appropriatif que transmissif, reposant en grande part sur les concepts d’habitus littératien et de médiation (textuelle, littéraire, culturelle), que J.-M. Privat a contribué grandement à théoriser par la suite. Cette attention accordée à la « réduction » des distances socio-culturelles dans le rapport aux œuvres et à leurs dimensions symboliques l’a conduit à la définition, et au développement avec Marie Scarpa, d’un nouveau paradigme interprétatif de la littérature, l’ethnocritique. Au fil du temps, d’autres contributions françaises ou étrangères (notamment celles de S. Ménard et V. Cnockaert, nos collègues canadiennes) ont régulièrement enrichi des notions cardinales comme le dialogisme culturel des discours littéraires, les conflits de cosmologie, l’ethnogénétique, les définitions sémio-anthropologiques d’oralité et littératie, etc. Les principes, la méthode, les enjeux – littéraires, linguistiques, didactiques – d’une telle herméneutique sont mis ici en pratique à nouveaux frais dans une lecture inédite d’un roman bien connu de Balzac, Eugénie Grandet.
