Abstract
Born on November 18, 1943 in Bucharest, Dan Buciu grew up in a musical environment, his father being the first soloist of the Bucharest Opera. A significant contribution to his formation was made by his studies with Dan Constantinescu, Tiberiu Olah, Aurel Stroe, Octavian Lazăr Cosma, Emila Comişel, Victor Giuleanu, Zeno Vancea, as well as the series of postgraduate trainings in the country (with Dinu Ciocan and Aurel Stroe) or at the International Summer Courses in Darmstadt (1970- 1975) where he studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bruno Maderna, György Ligeti, Aloys Kontarski or Vinko Globokar, which culminated in obtaining the scientific title of Doctor in Musicology in 1992. In 1968, he began his teaching career at the Ciprian Porumbescu Conservatory of Music in Bucharest (today the National University of Music in Bucharest) where he taught Musical Forms, Harmony, Musical Analysis, Stylistics of Modern Choral Writing, and in 1970 he became a member of the Union of Composers and Musicologists of Romania, an institution that awarded him 6 awards for creation, and in 2025 he was awarded the Marin Constantin award at the "Marin Constantin 100" anniversary gala, held by the Madrigal - Marin Constantin National Chamber Choir on February 27, at the Romanian Senate. Since 1998 he has been a doctoral supervisor at the Doctoral School of the National University of Music in Bucharest, and from 2000 to 2008 he led this institution as Rector. He has published numerous articles and studies in journals in Romania, Russia, Germany, collaborated on radio and television shows, held conference cycles in the U.S.A. (1994), in France (1996) or Sweden (1995), published the volumes Elemente de scriitura modală and two volumes of Harmony. In his creations he approached the following genres: symphonic, vocal-symphonic, chamber, choral - the latter being the one to which he dedicated most of his works. Here are some of the main titles of his creations: SYMPHONY MUSIC - Scenes for orchestra and piano; Entertainment for small orchestra; Romanian Suite for orchestra; Slabs work for large orchestra; Winter Holidays Suite for orchestra; Nostalgic Suite for orchestra, VOCALSYMPHONY MUSIC Cantata Iarba pământului and Cantata Pax Mundi both for high voice and orchestra, CHAMBER MUSIC Sonata for solo piano; Nelinişti for two flutes; Piccolo suite and Mosaic II, - Suite for solo flute; Rustic Suite for flute and bagpipes (commissioned within an American-Romanian cultural program); Sketches for a self-portrait (septet presented in its first absolute audition at the University of Music in Munich in December 2001); Lyrica Mundi - cycle of lieder on verses by Dante, Robert Denos, N. Stănescu, V. Alecsandri, MUSIC FOR CHOIR Remember Hiroshima for choir and magnetic tape; Ana lui Manole written on verses specially commissioned by Nichita Stănescu choir (with stage movement), bagpipes, bell, toacă; Rondeau on verses by Charles d'Orleans (in French) for flute and mixed choir; Sonnet on verses by Rainer Maria Rilke (in German) mixed choir and organ; Games for the peace of the planet for children's choirs with stage movement. His works have been performed in Romania, the U.S.A., France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, India, Sweden, Canada, Moldova.
