Abstract
L'Eglise catholique s'est toujours preoccupee des soins de sante, qu'elle considere comme une part fondamentale et essentielles des oeuvres de charite. Helas! dans bien des pays, elle doit se battre pour exercer cette mission vitale. Au Nouveau-Brunswick egalement ou, apres plus de 100 ans de libre exercice, elle est aujourd'hui soumise a l'Etat dans ce domaine, quand elle n'en est pas exclue totalement. L'A. trace un portrait de la reforme de la sante, commencee dans les annees quarante, pour aboutir, a travers divers rapports, projets de loi, contestations, amendements, etc., a la loi actuelle du 25 mars 1992. Les reactions ont ete vives de la part de l'Eglise catholique, car, a toutes fins pratiques, elle se voyait eliminee du domaine de la sante au profit de corporations laiques regionales. L'Association catholique de la sante du Nouveau-Brunswick, se basant sur le modele accepte pour l'ecole, fit des contre-propositions et, apres de longs et patients efforts, finit par gagner le Gouvernement a signer avec elle une lettre d'interpretation et d'entente, qui a servi de base a une ultime reforme de la Loi sur les hopitaux. L'A. met en relief les faits saillants de cette entente qui, sans permettre le retour a la liberte d'autrefois, pose a l'Eglise de nouveaux defis interessants pour mieux exercer sa mission apostolique de charite.
