The A14 Huntingdon Viaduct in the UK is a post-tensioned concrete box bridge that carries the A14 over the Brampton Road overbridge and the East Coast Main Line. Strengthening required beams to be placed under the six-span viaduct to reinforce and support the half joints carrying the midspan over the railway line and road. Three major defects were identified as requiring urgent work: concrete spalling at the top of the piers, lack of reinforcement in the half joints and insufficient grouting in the post-tensioning tendons in spans three and five. An elevated cantilevered crash deck was provided to transport, position and install the steel strengthening beams and to provide a working platform for the teams installing new inspection manholes and conducting the remedial work on the tendons. The crash deck was constructed using heavy-duty welded-lattice sectional girders supported on three pairs of high-load-capacity towers. The erection of the crash deck is described.
