Abstract
El agua subterránea constituye la principal fuente de agua potable en el Valle de Toluca. Esto ha inducido a una sobreexplotación del acuífero, así como la extinción de zonas húmedas y una constante degradación de la calidad del agua. Un enfoque combinado de investigación de campo y modelación numérica fue asumido para estimar las interacciones entre el agua superficial y subterránea en torno a la laguna de Almoloya. Un análisis de los datos piezométricos indica que los gradientes hidráulicos verticales bajo el área de la lagunason extremadamente bajos, sugiriendo tasas de infiltración muy bajas. Asimismo, los datos geoquímicos e isotópicos del agua superficial y subterránea también indican que ocurre muy poca infiltración de superficie. La simulación numérica demuestra que la infiltración incrementada de agua superficial no es probablemente la causa primaria en la desaparición del sistema de humedades. Otros factores tales como la disminución de la recarga de agua superficial y el flujo lateral de las montañas circundantes son probablemente más significantes. La simulación también sugiere que los contaminantes originados en la laguna actualmente introduciéndose muy próximos a los pozos de producción. Actualmente, la magnitud del impacto de contaminación sobre los pozos de producción del sistema Lerma no esta bien definido, aunque esto claramente representa una amenaza a largo plazo sobre la calidad del agua del acuíferos.
