Avec les méthodes les plus sûres et les plus éclairantes, Axel Maugey entreprend, dans cette réédition actualisée d’un grand succès de la modernité québécoise, l’étude de cette société et de la place que la poésie du Québec a prise et prend. Il est ainsi amené à étudier l’œuvre d’une dizaine de poètes québécois : Paul-Marie Lapointe, Roland Giguère, Jean-Guy Pilon, Gaston Miron, Yves Préfontaine, Gatien Lapointe, Paul Chamberland, Jacques Brault, Fernand Ouellette et Gérald Godin. Il établit clairement le lien vital unissant le Québec à ses poètes, non seulement en ce qui a trait à l’inspiration thématique « naturelle » (les beautés de la nature) mais en ce qui regarde l’engagement et la mission entrevue et poursuivie : constitution d’une langue, recherche de nouvelles valeurs inspiratrices, orientations idéologiques… Cet ouvrage remarquable, apprécié aussi bien au Québec et en France qu’aux États-Unis, au Canada, au Mexique et dans de nombreux autres pays, réconcilie poésie et politique, sociologie et littérature et contribue à reculer les portes de la poésie pour la faire entrer dans notre vie quotidienne.
