Dans le cadre du projet européen FORMAT (Fully Optimised Road Maintenance), trois techniques d'entretien mince de chaussée fissurée ont été testées sur le manège de fatigue de l'IFSTTAR. La première technique consistait en couche de 4 cm de béton bitumeux mince (BBM), la deuxième en un béton bitumineux très mince (BBTM) de 2,5 cm d'épaisseur et armé d'une géogrille en partie basse, et la troisième en un BBTM classique de 2,5 cm. La structure initialement endommagée présentait une fissuration généralisée des couches bitumineuses. Bien que fissurée, cette chaussée avait encore une capacité structurelle avec une déflexion moyenne de 55 1/100 mm sous un essieu de 13 tonnes. Après 1 million de chargements appliqués par des jumelages chargés à 65 KN, les trois techniques d'entretien ont présenté une fissuration transversale fine sur toute leur longueur. Avec la poursuite du trafic jusqu'à 3,3 millions de chargements, les fissures existantes sur les planches de 4 cm de BBM et 2,5 cm de BBTM sont devenues plus ouvertes et plus marquées. Sur le BBTM armé d'une géogrille, on notait des fissures transversales bien marquées sur seulement 10 % de la longueur de la planche.
