Abstract
The Sikorsky Bridge served as the gateway to Connecticut's Merritt Parkway since the 1940s. Due to traffic safety concerns, limited traffic capacity and scour susceptibility, the bridge was replaced in 2006. This article describes some of the challenges that were encountered in replacing the bridge. Because the Merritt Parkway is on the National Register of Historic Places, the new bridge had to include architectural treatments and landscaping characteristics relevant to its historic setting. Various site constraints, including a sensitive wetlands areas and a commuter railroad along the river's east bank, also needed to be addressed. A five-span structural steel girder bridge was selected in order to lessen impacts on the wetlands and the commuter railway. This design also reduced the number of piers required in the river, necessary since the river is a Coast Guard-regulated navigation channel. The reduced number of piers and their alignment were designed to minimize the scour that had plagued the old bridge. Staged construction and a design scheme that created an alignment adjacent to the existing structure allowed two lanes of traffic to be maintained in each direction for the duration of the project. The bridge has been equipped with a bridge monitoring system, a weather information system and an incident management system. Information from these systems can be remotely accessed for review and quick action. The completed bridge meets or exceeds all of the necessary performance and design requirements.
