Reliability-Based Assessment of Steel-Free Deck System Bridges

Abstract
The aim of this research is to evaluate the reliability of bridges which use non-conventional materials or structural forms such as Steel-free deck system where the available deterioration models developed for conventional systems do not apply. The method developed here utilizes the reliability theory, and establishes a deterioration model for such bridges based on their failure mechanisms. As there is no established deterioration model available, it is difficult to predict the reliability of this kind of bridge systems at different time intervals. The developed method has been applied to Steel-free concrete deck bridge, namely the Crowchild bridge located in Calgary, which is a relatively new approach to bridge design and construction. Cracking of concrete due to regular live loads or other natural phenomena does not have considerable influence on the failure modes of the system; therefore, the current assessment techniques in bridge management systems are not applicable to this system. A Finite Element model of the bridge has been developed and calibrated with experimental results on static deflection, vibration characteristics, load distribution, and crack patterns. The system reliability has been determined for different time intervals using the proposed method. The results show that the system is quite over-performing and there is a low probability of failure even in 75 years after opening the bridge to traffic for such system.
